What is Propecia?

Propecia is a branded treatment for hair loss. It contains the active ingredient Finasteride.

Finasteride works by reducing the breakdown of the male hormone testosterone into another hormone called dihydrotestosterone or DHT. DHT is responsible for male hair loss. By reducing the amount of DHT affecting hair follicles, finasteride can reduce hair loss in upto 90% of men. In some cases, it can also stimulate hair regrowth.
One tablet should be taken at the same time each day
Do not take Propecia:
  • If you are a woman
  • If you are allergic to finasteride or any of the other ingredients of this medicine
  • If you are already taking finasteride or dutasteride for prostate problems.

Infertility has been reported in men who took finasteride for long time and had other risk factors that may affect fertility.

Mood alterations such as depressed mood, depression and, less frequently, suicidal thoughts have been reported in patients treated with Propecia.
