The Flu vaccine is given as an intramuscular injection and is usually made of a combination of three to four vaccines against the most prevalent types of flu for the current season. As the flu virus changes every year, the flu vaccine is also updated annually to offer the best protection against flu.
The Flu vaccine is given via one intramuscular injection into the muscle of the upper arm.
The Flu vaccine is an annual vaccine and needs to be taken every year at the start of each flu season.
The most common side-effect of the Flu vaccine is a sore, achy or heavy arm. There can also be some pain, soreness, redness or bruising at the injection site. Other side-effects include minor flu like symptoms such as a mild temperature, aches and pains, headaches, dizziness, tiredness or generally feeling “run down”. Side effects are short lived and usually only last for a few days following the vaccination.
There is a very small chance that some people can be allergic to the vaccine and cause anaphylaxis. This is extremely rare and the risk of this is no different to an allergy to any other medication. Our vaccinators always check to make sure you are not at risk of any allergies prior to the vaccine and are prepared to manage an allergies if needed.
