Medical cannabis is legal and must be prescribed under the care of a specialist UK prescriber listed as a specialist in the GMC register. Prescriptions are issued on a 'named patient' basis after agreement from a multidisciplinary prescribing team.
Medical cannabis is a broad term used to refer to medical products made from, or related to, cannabis. These products are refered to as Cannabis-based Medicinal Products or CBMPs. CBPMs contain the cannabinoids CBD (cannabidiol) and THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

CBMPs include the dried cannabis flower, as well as oils, lotions and sprays Medical cannabis must meet strict safety and quality standards and are supplied on prescription from specialist medical prescribers.
All patients will need to be assessed for suitability medical cannabis. To be eligible for assessment, patients must have a formal diagnosis for an eligible condition and have tried traditional treatment.

Patients can self-refer themselves and complete the eligibility form online or ask their healthcare professional to refer them using this form

In order for the specialist to make a full assessment, patients will need to provide access to their medical records. Over-the-counter CBD is available in the form of CBD oils, drops, vapes, sprays and pastilles. These are regarded as a food supplement and contain only one cannabinoid, CBD or cannabidiol. These usually contain lower concentrations of CBD then medical cannabis and do not need to meet the stringent requirements for medical grade cannabis. They do not contain THC (tetrahydrocannabinol).

Recreational cannabis is not legal in the UK. Unlike medical cannabis, cannabis obtained for recreational use does not need to meet any safety and quality requirements.

Medical cannabis is legal in the UK and available via private prescripitons from specialist UK prescribers. Medical cannabis must meet stringent purity, quality and safety standards to ensure safety and efficacy. Patients prescribed cannabis will be under the care of a specialist, who will also conduct regular follow ups to ensure the patients health and treatment is progressing as it should.
